The islands of Greece are made of hills and full of rocks, which means that farming is difficult there. So, much of the foods from ancient Greece were imported from other countries. In fact, they ate so many foods from different parts of the world that we would call their food the first fusion cuisine.

Even though the food came from all over the world, the ancient Greeks used food as a way to set themselves apart from other civilizations. Philosophers and scholars had opinions on which foods were to be eaten in order to keep a person's 'humours' aligned. There were many etiquette rules that had to be followed, all of which were meant to distinguish the Greeks from their 'barbaric' neighbors. Food was even a centerpiece of their renowned symposiums where they gathered to discuss ideas.

Besides its great ideas, ancient Greece is also known for bread baked in the first commercial ovens, the first cookbook, and for first having celebrity chefs. While food was important to all civilizations, it is the Greeks that also first used food as an art form and a main source of social activity.
